Major Mukund married his long time friend Indhu Rebecca Varghese on 28 August 2009 and had a daughter Ashreya born on 17 March 2011. He received his Bachelor of Commerce From Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya at Enathur and a diploma in journalism from the Madras Christian College, Tambaram. Major Mukund was an alumnus of the Officers Training Academy and was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Rajput Regiment (22 Rajput) in 2006. He served at the Infantry School in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh and was also a part of the United Nations Mission in Lebanon. Colonel M N Rai hailed from Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh. Colonel M N Rai was commissioned into the 2/9 Gorkha Rifles in September 1997. Later, Col M N Rai was deputed to serve with the Rashtriya Rifles and took over the command of the 42nd Battalion of Rashtriya Rifles in May 2013. By 2013, Col M N Rai had put in over 15 years of service and evolved into a committed soldier and a very fine officer. At approximately 11 pm, two individuals on motor cycle approached a mobile check post situated in Goalpara district of Assam, and were asked to stop. On being challenged, they started firing on the party and tried to flee.Havildar Vir Singh immediately challenged the terrorists to halt and warned them of retaliatory fire. Instead of stopping, the terrorists opened indiscriminate fire and attempted to flee under the cover of darkness.
