Rifleman Vinod Singh hailed from Danapur Jaurian village in Akhnoor District of Jammu & Kashmir. After completing his studies, Rifleman Vinod Singh joined Indian Army and was recruited into 8 JAK LI of the famed Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regiment, a regiment known for its brave soldiers and numerous successful operations in various wars and ongoing border skirmishes. During 2018, Rifleman Vinod Singh’s unit was deployed in Sunderbani sector in Rajouri district of J & K.

Rajouri LOC Firing : 09th Apr 2018

India shares around 3000 Km border with Pakistan in which around 740 km of LOC falls in Jammu & Kashmir. The LOC is highly active and volatile where ceasefire violations occur very often in this area. In 2017 alone, 860 ceasefire violations took place along the LOC and 111 incidents on the International Border, claiming the lives of many security personnel. In the year 2018, 633 ceasefire violations were recorded along the LOC and the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir in first two months of 2018. Of these 432 incidents were reported from the Line of Control and 201 on the International Border. On 9th April 2018, another ceasefire violation took place in Rajouri district of J & K.

At around 5.15 PM, Pakistani troops initiated unprovoked firing on the Indian posts from across the border in Sunderbani sector in Rajouri district. Pakistan Army violated ceasefire and resorted to unprovoked firing using small arms, automatics and mortars. The Indian forces retaliated forcefully giving a befitting reply and the fierce exchange of fire continued for several hours. However, during the cross-border exchange of fire, Rifleman Jaki Sharma and Rifleman Vinod Singh manning the forward posts in Sunderbani Sector got severely injured. Rifleman Vinod Singh later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred.

Rifleman Vinod Singh was a gallant and dedicated soldier, who laid down his life in the service of the nation. Rifleman Vinod Singh is survived by his father Ajit Singh.
