Mohammad Ayub Pandith was born in Nowpora in April 1960. After pursuing M.Com and LLB, he joined the Police department in 1990 as sub-inspector. After completing his basic training in Udhampur in 1992, the officer was posted in district Pulwama. Thereafter, he served as SHO of different police stations. He was promoted as DSP in 2013. During his career, he has served different wings of District Police, Railways, Vigilance and Security in different capacities. He had received many appreciations for his work and conduct.
DSP Mohammad Ayub who was posted outside the mosque during ‘Shab-e-Qadr’. The deputy SP was there to ensure the safety and security of all devotees who had come to pray at Jamia Masjid on Shab-e-Qadr night, including the Mirwaiz. The DSP was posted at the access control of the mosque to prevent people offering prayers in peace from any kind of violence. He was doing his duty on 23 June 2018 standing at the access control of the mosque at around 12:30, when the mob attacked him. In the incident of gruesome lynching, Mohammad Ayub Pandit, a deputy superintendent of police was stripped naked and stoned to death by a mob outside the historic Jamia Masjid in Jammu and Kashmir’s Nohawatta district during the night long celebration of Ramzan. The body was defaced and disfigured, and his clothes were torn. Thousands of people had visited from all over Kashmir to observe ‘Shab-e-Qadr’ (the night of power) when the incident took place Wednesday around 12:30 pm. Mohammad Ayub in his defense had opened fire from his pistol when the mob attacked him, injuring three persons. The mob then went on a rampage, targeting empty security pickets in the area. Police reinforcements were rushed to restore normalcy in the area. Defending the firing by the officer in which three persons were injured.
The officer is survived by his wife, unmarried son and daughter.
