Lance Naik Sandeep Singh hailed from Chhotepur village of Gurdaspur district in Punjab. After completing his initial education he joined Indian army in the year 2007 and later was inducted in 4 Para(Special Force) regiment of the Indian army. Being a para-commando he had served in some of the most dangerous and risky areas. Some of the reports indicated (Although not confirmed by the army) that While serving in J & K, he became part of the unit’s Ghatak (commando) team, which carried out the surgical strikes on militant bunks along the Line of Control in Pakistan in 2016 which eliminated huge launch pad of militants in that area.
Tangdhar Operation : 24 Sep 2018
During 2018, Lance Naik Sandeep Singh’s unit was deployed in Kupwara district of J & K for counterinsurgency operations. The Tangdhar sector of Kupwara is very volatile and is often used by the militants to infiltrate into Indian territory. The troops have to keep a very strict vigil and face challenging situations on a regular basis. The infiltration was first detected on 22nd September night when troops of 4 Para commandos who were on patrol noticed suspicious movement near the Eagle Post in Gagadhri Nar area of Tanghdar sector along the LOC. Lance Naik Sandeep Singh commanded the patrol team who spotted the militants bid to sneak in swung into action. Singh on noticing suspicious moves deployed his squad and moved further to ascertain the presence of militants. The terrorists were challenged, but they launched heavy fire on the troops, which was retaliated and in the ensuing encounter that went on till 24th September, five terrorists were eliminated. Initially on 23rd September, two terrorists were killed in the gunfight. However, while the troops were engaged in the search operation, three other terrorists opened another round of firing and were later gunned down. Lance Naik Sandeep Singh despite being hit by the barrage of bullets gunned down three militants in this operation and saved the life of his comrades. He later succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom.
Lance Naik Sandeep Singh is survived by his wife and a son.
