Major Joginder Singh was awarded Kirti Chakra (Posthumous) for an act of
Gallantry in Jammu and Kashmir. Major Joginder Singh Tanwar was commanding a
rifle company deployed in militant infested Kalaruch Valley of Kupwara
District in J&K and had deployed an effective intelligence network in his
area. On 13' August 1999, during a seek and destroy mission in Rangat, Major
Tanwar noticed a group of militants. He immediately opened lire killing one
militant on the spot. The panic-stricken militants started fleeing, with
Major Tan....ar and his LMG group in hot pursuit. Braving a rain of bullets
and leading his men from the front, he kept up the advance and killed one
more militant during a firelight, which lasted for over an hour. A huge
quantity of arms and ammunition was also recovered. On 8th September 1999.
Major Tanwar was tasked to lead a small team to seek and destroy militants
likely to be hiding in Buinar NaIlah which is steep and narrow with dense
undergrowth. At approximately 1100 hours. Four foreign militants opened
heavy fire from a dominating position at close range injuring Major Tanwar's
left hand. Ignoring his injury, he ordered his team to bring suppressive
lire. While he himself closed in from the flank and using excellent field
craft. took position behind a boulder. Despite his left hand being partially
incapacitated he. Along with his buddy. Opened accurate fire, killing three
militants on the spot. The officer refused to be evacuated till completion
of the operation at 1730 hours. Resulting in the success of the operation
and the permanent loss of his left index finger. For this act of bravery.
Major Tanwar was awarded the Kirti Chakra.
